About Whigs

WHIGS is an acronym of Woking & Horsell Indifferent Golf Society. The Society was formed in the mid 1970s by four members of Woking & Horsell Cricket Club. The four founder members were Dennis Brackley, Geoff Payne, Geoff Neads and John Sturgess, who are sadly no longer with us.

In the early days the Society was a small but select band. It is now much larger but, hopefully, no less select, with up to 65 playing members, of whom around 50% are or were members of the Cricket Club. Membership is by invitation only.

The Society usually holds five meetings a year, in March, May, July, September and December, at which the average attendance is around 30.

Members compete at the Meetings in Singles Stableford points competitions, for which there is a separate trophy for each Meeting. There are also year long competitions for Best Net Eclectic score, Aggregate Best Three Points scores, and Aggregate Pairs Best Three Combined Points scores, for each of which there is a trophy. In addition there is an annual Singles Matchplay Knockout competition for the Tom Scott Trophy, named after the first Secretary of the Society.

The Society’s rules include the provision that each member must play in at least two meetings per year, failing which the continuation of membership will be reviewed by the Committee.
